REVIEW OF
Bringing the Civil War to the Classroom
We recently reviewed your new teacher's guide Bringing the Civil War to the Classroom, for sale in our bookstore here at Gettysburg National Military Park. After reading Blocks I and II, I have to tell you this is long overdue. I am going to ask all of our staff who present student education programs (basically our entire permanent Ranger staff) to read the Guide in preparation for the Spring Student Education Season.
As the Chief of Interpretation and Protection here at Gettysburg, I spend most of my time protecting our excellent staff from the bureaucratic necessities of the organization, but once in a while I get invited to my kid's classroom to speak about the Civil War, and I am always amazed at the responses I get from the teachers when I try to gently shed some light on the bias/politically correctness, myths, and the like. Even some who have--not that long ago--graduated from some fairly well-known universities are at first uncertain about how to take a new look at deeply held convictions. The good news is that I now have a great resource to refer them to and assist in their journey.

| I have also asked our bookstore manager to stock copies because I would like to highlight the Guide (and a few other worthy publications) in a teacher section during our busy spring bus season. We will expose our teachers to the Guide, and I am also going to make sure that the exhibit design firm (who is working on our new Museum/Visitor Center) has the opportunity to read it. While the Guide is aimed at the classroom, we have the best classroom in the world here at the park, and our new museum will be designed to prepare the student (of all ages) to visit and understand the battlefield in its full context.
Thanks again for all of your hard work on this.
